LGBT Issues
July 3rd, 2006 is the first anniversary of Spain’s legalization of same-sex marriages. During a disaster, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) individuals face additional concerns, and thus require additional preparedness steps. Lack of legal recognition for same-sex married couples can mean extra hurdles if one partner must act as "next of kin". Dealing with organizations unfamiliar with (or hostile to) LGBT concerns can cause extra trauma during a crisis. Disasters can also "out" LGBT relationships, sometimes with media attention. This is often exacerbated by repeated, extensive questions from disaster service agencies about living situations, family support, etc.
Consider whether your preparedness outreach properly informs LGBT residents about these and other issues of importance to this community.
