Utilities: Water

Be sure everyone knows how and where to turn off water. Water can cause severe structural damage to a building, damage electrical wiring and spread hazardous materials such as toxic cleaners, asbestos and lead-based paint. Leaks and standing water also create opportunities for bacteria, molds, and insects (such as disease carrying mosquitoes) to grow.

If there is a leak, shut off the water as soon as possible, dry out the flooded area, and if necessary contact a professional to repair any damage.
